Gastrointestinal Issues and Dehydration Risk with Semaglutide

During treatment with semaglutide, some patients may experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. These symptoms usually lessen over time, but if they persist, they can lead to fluid loss, i.e., dehydration. To avoid dehydration, patients should ensure adequate fluid intake. This is particularly important for those with pre-existing kidney disease, as dehydration may worsen kidney function impairment. Additionally, if you already have delayed gastric emptying (gastroparesis), using semaglutide may cause severe or serious gastrointestinal adverse reactions. Therefore, you must consult a doctor before use. If you develop severe, persistent abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, seek immediate medical attention, as this could be a sign of acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), a serious side effect requiring urgent treatment.

Hypoglycemia Risk and Diabetic Eye Disease with Semaglutide

p>    When semaglutide is used in combination with sulfonylureas or insulin, the risk of hypoglycemia increases significantly. Warning signs of hypoglycemia include cold sweat, cool pale skin, headache, fast heartbeat, nausea, extreme hunger, vision changes, drowsiness, weakness, nervousness, anxiety, confusion, difficulty concentrating, or shakiness. Your doctor may ask you to monitor your blood glucose more frequently and may reduce the dose of sulfonylurea or insulin as appropriate. Additionally, if you have diabetic retinopathy, note that rapid improvement in blood glucose levels may temporarily worsen this eye condition. If you experience any vision problems during treatment, inform your doctor immediately. In rare cases, an eye disease called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) may occur, causing painless unilateral vision loss. If you experience sudden or rapid vision loss, seek emergency medical attention.

Drug Interactions and Other Precautions with Semaglutide

When using semaglutide, inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, especially the following: levothyroxine (for thyroid disease), as co-administration may affect thyroid hormone levels and requires monitoring; warfarin or other oral anticoagulants, as frequent coagulation testing may be needed to adjust the dose; and insulin, as your doctor will instruct you on how to reduce your insulin dose and increase blood glucose monitoring frequency to avoid hyperglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis. Additionally, each tablet of this medicine contains 23 mg of sodium, which is approximately 1% of the recommended maximum daily sodium intake for adults. Regarding driving and operating machinery: this medicine usually does not affect the ability to drive or operate machines. However, if hypoglycemia occurs when used with sulfonylureas or insulin, it may reduce attention and reaction speed; you must not drive or operate machinery under such conditions. Particular caution is also needed if you experience dizziness.
