Semaglutide tablets are a once-daily prescription medicine used for adults with type 2 diabetes. It should be used together with diet and exercise to primarily improve blood sugar levels. Additionally, for adults with type 2 diabetes who already have established high risk, Semaglutide may be used to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart disease, stroke, or death. The safety and effectiveness of this medicine have not been established in children, so it is not recommended for use in children. Semaglutide works by mimicking the body's own GLP-1 hormone, helping to control blood sugar at multiple steps.
Before using Semaglutide, you must understand its most serious potential risk: it may cause thyroid tumors, including cancer. If you develop symptoms such as a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath, tell your healthcare provider immediately, as these may be signs of thyroid cancer. In rodent studies, Semaglutide and similar medicines have been shown to cause thyroid tumors. You should NOT use Semaglutide if you or a family member have ever had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2). Also, do not use Semaglutide if you have a serious allergic reaction to Semaglutide or any of the ingredients in the medicine.
Before starting Semaglutide, be sure to tell your doctor if you have or have ever had: pancreas or kidney disease; a history of vision problems related to diabetes; plan to have surgery that requires anesthesia or deep sedation; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant — because it is not known if this medicine will harm your unborn baby, you should stop using the medicine 2 months before planning to become pregnant; are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed — breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment. Additionally, Semaglutide may interact with other medicines. Tell your doctor about all your prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.
