Baloxavir marboxil is a prescription medicine used to treat and prevent influenza. It is suitable for people aged 5 years and older. For treatment, it can be used to relieve symptoms when patients have had flu symptoms for no more than 48 hours and are otherwise healthy or at high risk of flu complications. For prevention, if taken after exposure to someone with the flu, baloxavir marboxil can serve as post-exposure prophylaxis to reduce the risk of getting the flu. It is important to note that baloxavir marboxil does not treat or prevent illnesses caused by pathogens other than the influenza virus, nor does it prevent bacterial infections that may occur with the flu. Currently, the safety and effectiveness of this medicine in children under 5 years of age have not been established, so it is not recommended for this age group.
Unlike over-the-counter medicines that only relieve surface symptoms such as fever and cough, the prescription medicine baloxavir marboxil works through a more direct mechanism. It attacks the influenza virus at its source with a single dose. Baloxavir marboxil is available as an oral tablet in two strengths, 40 mg and 80 mg, and the specific dose is determined by the doctor based on the patient's body weight. Studies have shown that treatment is most effective when started within 48 hours of flu symptom onset or virus exposure. For patients aged 12 years and older, taking a single dose of baloxavir marboxil resulted in feeling better in an average of 2.3 days, compared to 3.3 days for the placebo group; for children aged 5 to 11 years, the average time to improvement was 5.75 days.
Baloxavir marboxil is very easy to take: a single oral tablet, with or without food. However, there is a very important precaution: while taking baloxavir marboxil, do not take it with dairy products, calcium-fortified beverages, laxatives, antacids, or any oral supplements containing iron, zinc, selenium, calcium, or magnesium, because these substances may affect the absorption of the medicine. If you accidentally take an overdose of baloxavir marboxil, go to the nearest emergency room immediately for help. If you need to receive a live flu vaccine after taking baloxavir marboxil, be sure to consult your doctor first.
